| I am a PhD student at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. I picked up this book on one of my many visits to the university library, early this year. I found it to be an invaluable source of scientific techniques in the field of neuroscience. It is very hard to find all the essential knowledge one needs in one place these days, yet this book provides just that. With an excellent structure and further referencing should one feel the need for greater detail. I believe that this is one book every neuroscience student and academic should have on their bookshelf. |

| With several glossy and colorful neuroscience textbooks in circulation, this unassuming little volume (which is still printed in black and white) has scarcely received the attention it deserves. Those who have taken a class with John Dowling know that this man is one heck of a good teacher. Trained in the days before Powerpoint and computers, Dowling knows how to make neuroscience come alive with just a piece of chalk and a blackboard. His skill in teaching shines through in Neurons and Networks.

Although this is the only neuroscience text that I have ever read, it's hard to imagine that anything could be more comprehensible. Dowling carefully walks the reader, step by step, through each point, making seemingly difficult concepts very easy to understand, even to those with no previous biological training.

Anyone who is considering purchasing this text should know that it rewards careful and thoughtful study. Neuroscience takes time and dedication to learn, and the same holds true with this text: you'll be very disappointed if you try to skim through it. Furthermore, the text is very concise and _every_ word counts! The distinguishing feature of this book, however, is that with sufficiently careful studying, the reader is left with a solid understanding of neurological principles and an intuitive grasp of neurophysiology. With many other biological texts, careful study simply leads to a jumble of poorly-integrated facts that, without further review, will likely be forgotten within a matter of months.

A second hallmark of this book is that, despite the very molecular focus of the first chapters, Dowling builds links to other disciplines like behavioral neuroscience, medicine, and evolution. The scope of the book is wide. Who else would have thought to put a painting of primates on the cover of a neuroscience text? After reading this book (cover to cover), I was left with a sense of amazement at not only the molecular and cellular complexity of the nervous system, but at all the architectural intricacies of neural networks that, having been refined over millions of years, are essential to what we recognize as the distinctly human capability for advanced cognition.
A pleasantly written introductory text with elegant illustrations by Harvard Professor John Dowling. Currently enrolled in his behavioral neuroscience class, I find this text captures the essential details for those with college-level physics and biochemistry backgrounds. As each chapter builds from the previous, it is recommended for private study as well. |
